The ISLEK is rich in a checkered and eventful history. Even the Celts and Romans settled here. There are still remains of Celtic fortresses or Roman villas, such as in Waxweiler on the Hüttenberg.

During the Second World War, the west wall was built with hump lines and numerous bunkers - also here in the ISLEK. Bunker systems in Arzfeld, Daleiden and Dasburg as well as the almost completely preserved hump line near Großkampenberg are reminiscent of those warlike times. Today, as a habitat and dwelling for wild cats, bats and other rare species, they represent important "footsteps" in the "Green Wall in the West".

Churches and chapels worth seeing document the deep religiosity of the region. Numerous customs, such as the Echternach Dancing Procession, which starts in Waxweiler, have survived and are still cultivated.
